2022 EWL Season Begins

Wifflers united on the Ellsworth Wiffle Diamond Tuesday as the twelfth season of the Ellsworth Wiffleball League began.

For the fourth consecutive season, Shady Characters, Cheap Goats, Jack Shack, and Guacamol-yay will return to battle for the Wiffle Series championship.

Shady Characters aim to defend their 2021 title, former back-to-back champions Jack Shack hope to return to glory, and Cheap Goats and Guacamol-yay will both be fighting for their first ever wiffle championship in what should be another stellar season of wiffle action.

2022 will welcome the most rookies to the Wiffle Diamond in at least five years, as a new generation of wifflers join the proven veterans for another season of wiffleball in Shadyside.

2021 Wiffler of the Year Mike threw out the ceremonial first pitch to EWL Commissioner, Joey, and shortly after, the 2022 season was underway.

EWL Opening Day 2021: Eleventh Season in Shadyside

After a rainout on the first Tuesday of May, the Ellsworth Wiffleball League returned to the Wiffle Diamond this Tuesday to celebrate Opening Day of the eleventh season in Shadyside.

The most decorated player in EWL history, Bob of Questionable Outfit/Loss Mitigation, returned to the Diamond for the first time in years to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

EWL Commissioner Joey received the pitch, and the eleventh season began with a rematch of last year’s Wiffle Series between Cheap Goats and two-time defending champions Jack Shack.

 

Cheap Goats Crush Shady Characters 22-1

Brett went 9-for-10, tying the EWL single-game record for doubles with five, and hitting for the cycle, in his second career game

In a historically dominant offensive performance, Cheap Goats pummeled Shady Characters 22-2, tying and nearly breaking several offensive single-game records. Brett and Joey led Cheap Goats with nine hits each, Christian contributed seven hits, and Dinger pitched a complete game win, allowing only one run on seven hits.

Tom K started on the mound for Shady Characters, and he fell behind early. Joey led off the game with a double, and the next batter, Brett, hit a two-run homer to right center, giving Cheap Goats an immediate 2-0 lead. Christian followed with a single. Tom K struck out Dinger for the first out of the inning, and when the next batter, Joey, singled, Cheap Goats were caught with runners in between bases for the second out of the inning.

Dinger retired Shady Characters’ first batter Dylan, and after allowing a one-out single to Tom K, Lucas grounded out to center to end the inning.

Tom K retired Cheap Goats in order in the top of second, the last inning that Shady Characters would not allow a run.

Shady Characters threatened in the bottom of the second. Brad led off with a single, and Sam followed with a single, putting two runners on with no outs. The next batter, Ryan, also singled, but Shady Characters made a series of baserunning errors, leading to a double play that ended the inning, stranding all runners without scoring a run.

Cheap Goats would add to their lead in the top of the third. Tom K retired Dinger for the first out of the inning, before allowing a triple to Joey. Brett followed with an RBI triple, scoring Joey to make the score 3-0. Christian then tripled, the third consecutive triple for Cheap Goats. The three-bagger scored Brett, extending the Cheap Goats lead to 4-0. Tom K then retired Dinger to end the inning, with Shady Characters trailing by four.

Dinger rolled through the bottom of the third, sending Dylan and Tom K down consecutively.

Shady Characters turned to the bullpen in the top of the fourth, sending Lucas to the mound, and the game got out of hand. Joey led off the inning with a double, and Brett followed with a two-run shot, making the score 6-0. Christian then singled, and Dinger followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Joey flew out to the mound for the first out of the inning, but Brett followed with a two-run double, clearing the bases to put Cheat Goats ahead 8-0. Christian then singled, scoring Brett, and the score was 9-0. Dinger followed with a double, putting runners on second and third with one out. Joey cleared the bags with a three-run blast to left, and Cheap Goats led 12-0. Brett followed with a double and moved to third when Christian singled for the third time in the inning. Lucas finally escaped the inning, getting Dinger to fly out to the mound. Cheap Goats had scored eight runs in the inning, and had pulled out to a twelve run lead.

Dinger continued to cruise in the bottom of the fourth, retiring Lucas and Brad in order.

Shady Characters turned to Sam on the mound, and Joey led off the top of the fifth with a solo homer, putting Cheap Goats ahead 13-0. Brett followed with a double, but Cheap Goats couldn’t put together consecutive monster innings. Lucas struck out Christian, and then retired Dinger to strand Brett at second, ending the inning.

Shady Characters finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Sam led off the inning with a solo homer to right-center. Dinger retired Ryan, and after allowing a one-out single to Dylan, got Tom K to fly out to the mound, ending the inning with the score 13-1.

The game went from a blowout to a historically one-sided game in the top of the sixth. Joey led off the inning with a double, and Brett drove him in with an RBI double, making the score 14-1. Christian then singled, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Dinger singled, scoring Brett from third, and the score was 15-1. Joey followed with a three run homer, his second three-run shot of the game, and Cheap Goats led 18-1. Brett followed with a double, for the fifth consecutive at-bat, which tied the EWL single-game record for doubles. Sam finally recorded the first out of the inning, getting Christian to groundout to right, but Dinger followed with an RBI single, scoring Brett to make the score 19-1. Joey then followed with a two-run homer, his second of the inning and fourth of the game, and the score was 21-1. Brett then singled, and Christian drove him in with an RBI triple, his second triple of the game. Sam and Shady Characters finally got out of the inning when Dinger flew out the left. Cheap Goats had scored 9 runs in the inning and led 22-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Shady Characters couldn’t put together a legendary rally, or any rally, in the bottom of the sixth. Lucas struck out for the first out of the inning, and after Brad his a one-out single, Dinger ended the game by getting Sam to fly out to the mound.

The win moved Cheap Goats to 2-0 on the season, and Shady Characters dropped to 0-2.

Guacamol-yay Hold Off Late Jack Shack Rally in 7-4 Win

Sean, playing in his second career EWL game, helped lead Guacamol-yay to victory, going 3-for-6 with three extra-base hits and four RBI

Guacamol-yay picked up their first win of the 2020 season in a 7-4 win over defending champions Jack Shack. Jan, Jude, and rookie Sean each had three hits, and Josh K and Jan’s combined effort on the mound kept the Jack Shack bats in check.

Dustin started on the mound for Jack Shack, and he got into trouble early. Jan singled to lead off the game, and two batters later, Jude singled, putting runners on the corners with one out. Sean followed with a bases-clearing triple, and Guacamol-yay led 2-0. Dustin then retired Jan to end the inning.

June went 3-for-5 with two singles and a double

Josh K took the mound for Guacamol-yay, and he cruised through the bottom of the first, retiring Adam and Brian in order.

Dustin matched him in the top of the second, retiring the side in order. Josh K then sent Dustin and Turbo down consecutively in the bottom of the second.

Guacamol-yay would open up a big lead in the top of the third. Sean led off the inning with a double, but was caught out attempting to extend the hit to a triple. Guacamol-yay wasn’t phased, however, and started a one-out rally. Jan doubled, and two batters later, Josh K crushed a two-run blast to left-center, making the score 4-0. June then doubled, and Sean hit Guacamol-yay’s second two-run homer of the inning, extending the lead to 6-0. Dustin retired Jan for the second out of the inning, and Jack Shack trailed by six.

Guacamol-yay turned to Jan, calling him from the bullpen to relieve Josh K. The first batter he faced, Doc, doubled, but Jack Shack couldn’t capitalize. Jan retired Adam and Brian, stranding the runner, and ending the inning.

Dustin fanned Josh K for the first out in the top of the fourth, and after Jude hit a one out single, he retired Sean to end the inning.

Jack Shack got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Dustin provided his own run support, leading off the inning with a solo homer, cutting the score to 6-1. Jack Shack couldn’t mount an extended rally, however, as Jan retired Turbo and Doc to end the inning.

Jack Shack turned to Adam, who relieved Dustin on the mound, and Guacamol-yay got a run back in the top of the fifth. Jan tripled to lead off the inning, and when the next batter, Josh K, grounded out, Jan scored on the play, making the score 7-1. Adam then retired Jude to end the inning, and Jack Shack trailed by six.

Jack Shack cut the Guacamol-yay lead in half in the bottom of the fifth. Adam doubled to lead off the inning, and Brian drove him in with an RBI double, cutting the score to 7-2. Dustin then hit his second homer of the game, a two-run shot that made the score 7-4. Turbo followed with a double, and it looked like Jack Shack was going to have a big inning. Jan buckled down, however, striking out Doc and retiring Adam to strand Turbo at second, ending the inning.

Adam cruised through the top of the sixth, striking out Sean and retiring Jan. Jack Shack trailed by three runs heading into their final at-bat.

Jan remained on the mount to close things out for Guacamol-yay. After retiring Brian, the first batter of the inning, Dustin his a one-out double. Jack Shack couldn’t mount a rally however, as Jan retired Turbo to strand the runner, ending the inning, and giving Guacamol-yay a 7-4 win.

Adam Leads Jack Shack to 9-7 Win Over Shady Characters in Season Opener

Adam led Jack Shack, starting the season with a leadoff homer and going five-for-five in the season opening win.

Adam went 5-for-5 with four runs scored, leading 2019 EWL champions Jack Shack to a 9-7 win over Shady Characters in the first game of the 2020 season. Brian pitched the complete game win, and Dustin and Turbo each contributed three hits for Jack Shack.

Dylan led off the top of the first with a single for Shady Characters, but Brian retired the next two hitters, Tom K and Lucas, ending the inning.

Jack Shack jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first, when the Co-MVP of the 2019 Wiffle Series, Adam, led off the game with a homer, his second career lead-off home run. Shady Characters’ starter, Tom K, fanned Turbo for the first out of the inning, and after giving up a one-out triple to Dustin, retired Brian to strand the runner, and Jack Shack led 1-0.

Brian struck out Sam for the first out of the second inning, then retired Ryan to end the inning with the score 1-0.

Jack Shack extended their lead in the bottom of the second. Doc singled in his first career EWL at-bat, and he moved to second when Adam followed with a single. Turbo then hit an inside-the-park homer, taking advantage of Shady Characters’ fielding and throwing errors, putting Jack Shack ahead 4-0. Tom K avoided further damage, retiring Dustin and Brian to end the inning.

Lucas then doubled, scoring Brad, and the score was 4-1. Sam followed with a single, clearing the bases and cutting the Jack Shack lead to 4-3. Brian escaped the inning, retiring Ryan for the second out of the inning.

Doc then singled, but was caught in between bases when the next batter, Adam, also singled. With one-out and runners on the corners, Turbo doubled, scoring Brian, and the score was 7-3. Dustin then followed with an RBI single, clearing the bases, putting Jack Shack ahead 9-5. Tom K then retired Brian to end the inning, but Jack Shack led by four runs.

Turbo went 3-for-5 with a single, double, and a home run, and drove in five of the nine Jack Shack runs.

With no outs and runners on the corners, Sam also singled, the fourth consecutive Shady Characters batter to single. No runners scored on the play, but the bases were loaded with no outs. Brian and Jack Shack were reeling, but he buckled down, retiring Ryan and Brad consecutively, as Shady Characters left the bases loaded, and Jack Shack held on to win 9-7.

The win moved Jack Shack to 1-0 on the season, and the loss dropped Shady Characters to 0-1.
